Today, in out Talent Pictures section, we will talk about Gloria Lozano, founder of BCNTouch.

Gloria Lozano studied Telecomm Engineering for UPC (Catalonia Polytechnic University), MBA for ESADE and PDD for IESE. She has developed most of her carrier working for multinational companies: Philips Semiconductors (currently NXP) and Meggitt Electronics in marketing, sales and sales operations first at local level, then at European and globally.

She is passionate about learning and easy use of technology. She loves to travel and to spend time with her  family and friends, “all of them sources of infinite learning too” to use her own words.  Thanks to the great support from her friends and family, Gloria launched her startup in 2010 and since then  she has strengthen her motivation and enthusiasm that impulse the development of her startup.

Barnatalent: Gloria, could you please explain the business concept that you developed through  BCNTouch ?

BCNTouch is a startup founded in Barcelona in 2010, with an international outlook, like its founders (Andrew Mackenzie, CTO and myself). We provide mobile web services to companies to increase business visibility and ease consumer interactions. Our service, TouchActive, is a mobile web platform to ease consumers shopping and make it social by allowing them to share products with other users and interact with brands through their products. Brands use TouchActive to understand what their customers want from them and modify their proposals to feet their demand.

Our customers are brands or retailers selling added value products (for which consumers think it’s worth to establish a dialog with the brand) that want to interact with their consumers and learn from these interactions. In parallel, we target consumers that make use of our platform from 2 main groups: “shoppers” that enjoy shopping and are ready to spend time making their shopping social and “always connected” digital consumers that want always easy access to the relevant information.

Barnatalent: Spanish governement is investing in NFC and your business is based on this technology. For whose who have not yet heard about it, could you please explain what NFC is?

NFC, Near Field Communication is a short range contactless technology standard (0-5cm) designed to communicate electronic devices easily and securily.

Last year 1 in 10 smartphones sold brought NFC technology. The forecast for this year is 200 million NFC phones. It will become mainstream for payments, transports access etc. We think that there are huge opportunities in mobile marketing, commerce and supply chain management too.

If you touch a tagged poster or product with your phone you can get information on the brand or the particular product. You capture information just touching, you don’t need to search, either write on your keyboard, either see the tag, so the user experience is far better than with other available methods.

Barnatalent: Group deals, that have boomed during last year, seems to develop social shopping too. What is the difference between group deals and BCNtouch?

The key difference is that we offer broad interaction and users decide how they want to interact with brands: get contents, talk on social networks, get products locations, get offers or simply share info with their mates.

We offer the non intrusive platform and users and brands will find the ways to connect.

Barnatalent: How did you start your business up?

Both cofounders share our vision of easy use of technology and saw in NFC a great opportunity to connect the physical world with the digital. We started with designing a prototype, “Chasing Clothes”, we provided the initial funding, recruited the development team and start to work following lean startup principles.

Barnatalent: What are the opportunities for tech startups n Barcelona?

Barcelona is a privileged city with great opportunities to attract talent and great professionals. The entrepreneur ecosystem is putting a lot of effort in attracting them since talent is the key driver for a tech startup.

Barnatalent: Would you recommend any mentorship program for entrepreneurs in Barcelona?

As per my experience, we have the best in class business schools in Barcelona (IESE, Esade) and Barcelona Activa, all of them provide excellent resources and programs for entrepreneurs. I don’t know if this answers the question, hope so.

Barnatalent: What kind of track record, leadership and vision should a would-be entrepreneur have to succeed?

Passion to make it happen, resilience and an excellent team are the key ingredients.

Barnatalent: What is your five years plan?

Our long term plan is to have our platform full of brands and users interacting through their products wherever they are. Brands becoming relevant for consumers and selling with TouchActive and consumers managing their interactions with their favorite brands.

We realize that it will take some time to have the products tagged, but using smart-posters to establish consumer brands communications is a reality. To make sure that our customers can use our platform today, we have enabled barcode and QR reading so that the interaction is available today.

Barnatalent: What is your favorite motivation motto?

Doing what we love is a luxury that everyone should afford: “we only have one life”.

For more information about BCNtouch you can have a look at some of the several articles about this startup or at their news page:

Carlota Estera is an inspiring, energizer, perseverant, optimistic “life-adventurer entrepreneur”.  She has lived and developed pioneering projects and companies in France, England and Spain in e-commerce, business development, on-line marketing industries. She relies on an extensive experience as public relations in sport and cultural events held in Barcelona, Paris and London.

Since 2008 she is Director at ESEI International Business School, delivered to children, teenagers and adults’ education, active partner at Sysandapp, S.L (icontrata.com , mobile applications (GooTaxi), etc) and leading the Mujeres IN ! project.

Today, in our Talent Pictures section, we will learn from Carlota about how Mujeres IN! contributes to the society we live in enhancing women’s talent and leadership in the world.

Barnatalent: Carlota, could you explain what “Mujeres In” is?

Mujeres IN! is a training, entertainment and networking initiative, which aims to boost the potential of women both at a personal and professional level. It is a participating platform for women who consider themselves or would like to become: Interesting, Intelligent, Intuitive, International, Innovative, and Independent. It is a meeting point for women who would like to improve as persons, businesswomen and entrepreneurs, who want to promote the qualities of leadership, make life balance, overcome obstacles, create networks and synergies, interact, help, learn and improve.

Barnatalent. It already sounds really INnovative, INternatonal and INteresting to us. Even so, could you say in a few words what makes “Mujeres IN!” special compared to other networking events and training providers?

Mujeres IN! organizes series of free lectures, gives seminars and workshops that are useful resources for your personal and professional development. You can make the best of you in an intimate and familiar environment where you can be yourself, 100% and openly . Mujeres IN! organize sports and leisure where you can unwind and be comfortable.

Here are some of our strengths:

  • Exclusive for women entrepreneurs in Barcelona
  • Very intimate atmosphere
  • With a backup of Esei International Business School
  • New and changing formats: conferences, workshops, interviews, round tables, sports, games, events. All very interactive. We always finish with a networking or organize special networking sessions such as La Colmena (“The Beehive”).
  • Focused on an individual: follow your dreams and keep the balance between your personal with professional life
  • Splendid location, excellent premises – a unique old building in Pedralbes district
  • Experts with proven experience in coaching, communication, public speaking following the American/British style

We organize events the last Thursday of every month. The idea is to look inside, seek changes to make things happen. Placed in a female only group women interact more openly, understand themselves better and learn something new each time.

Barnatalent: Do you think that women have a different way to network?

In the end, it all comes to communication.

As man and women communicate differently, they create their relations with others in a singular way. They focus on personal aspects more than just the professional ones and this way the do not only create business contacts but real relations.

e.g: women tend to be empathic so if a woman meets a woman, she will make the other feel comfortable first, she will break the ice and get into deeper aspects step by step. Men go more straight to the point, they are more direct.

Women tend to care and it is proven that they keep long-term relationships; they manage to exchange business contacts into friendship.

Barnatalent: Do you think that Barcelona is a good destination for women to develop their career?

The amount of small and medium enterprises is high in Barcelona and Catalans are well-known for having an entrepreneurial spirit. The amount of networking events and opportunities is growing and both public and private institutions are putting a lot of effort to help entrepreneurs to succeed as we are conscious that this is the only way for our country to improve its economic situation.

Women are well-educated and many have an international mind, they are focused on their careers and they are able to conciliate it fine with their personal life. We have met many designers, freelancers, architects, business women, etc since we launched the Mujeres IN! platform and they all have in common the willingness to keep growing personally and professionally and relate their careers with their passions.

If you are interested in Mujeres IN! activities, feel free to have a look at their Webiste or follow them on Twitter. They  organize events the last Thursday of every month and they are looking for contributors.

The world is a mosaic of visions and each vision is encapsulated by a language… Every time a language is lost, one vision of the world disappears.“ Davis Crystall

When we learn a new language, you learn more than words, the language has grown and nurtured with the collective experience of people throughout its history.

Aprenem is a group of people whose goal is to encourage the social use of Catalan while learning other languages. They facilitate language learning process organizing reading and conversation workshops in Barcelona capital city and surrounding areas.

The innovative methodology of Aprenem is based on a natural process of language exchange: you will learn languages on the basis of group reading exercises by reading and speaking, teaching your language and learning another one, without any grammar or test.

So Catalans teach Catalan and learn English, English teach English and learn Spanish, Italians teach Italian and learn Portuguese, etc.  Every week the participants are given a reading schedule and guide and prepare the texts prior to each session to work it in small groups during the workshops.  Each group includes a volunteer who leads the workshop, resolves doubts, coach the group and focus on reading fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversation on various topics.

Aprenem methodology has been included the database of the International Center for Best Practices Linguamón-House of Languages. To learn more, click here

Workshops are open to all, free, adapted to different levels and are organized in public spaces such as schools, libraries, community centres, etc. Here is the list of all workshops in different cities at different hours. There must be one in your town or neighborhood.

Also, learning and teaching in the workshops enforce the cohesion and social and integration between new comers and old citizens. By giving and receiving, people learn languages and cultures together and discover that they have many things in common. Aprenem is more than just practising languages: people get to know each other and they organize social activities, such as World Bread making workshops.

Personal Coach Sophia Blasco Castell is founder and coordinator of Aprenem project since 2005.  She is interested in languages and PNL and she studied medicine and food nutrition. As a coach, since 2004 she has carried on a series of activities in collaboration with local town councils and public administration and with private sessions to help people improve their emotional wellbeing.  She is author of  a free e-book about the impact of stress and how to prevent it  in Catalan only) “L’estrés a ratlla” and  She  contributes  to “Jornal.cat“  and  to “Des de la Mediterrània”. Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Women in Business

Careers, International, Job Market, Women

In the world where male dominance is quite high and most of the businesses are driven by male body, the existence and contribution of women can’t be neglected.

Sadly, there is still a long road ahead for women. Female CEO executives are compensated far less than their male counterparts. Some studies attribute it to leaving the work force several times to take care of children, some studies claim women are not as aggressive as men, and some studies cannot pinpoint any reasons for discrepancies in salaries.

Even in Europe educated women in business receive less, half that amount compared to men. No surprise then that the infographic focuses on the strides society has made in terms of gender equality but also how much is left to do.

Today, in out Talent Picture section, we will talk about Isabel Pérez Ruíz founder of Meet BCN, provider of coworking spaces, virtual office services and office support.

Graduated from Universidad Politécnica de Catalonia and from La Salle International Graduate School, she worked as technical engineer and project manager in environmental industry and then, in April 2011, she made up her mind to start her own business up. But not any business: as her job was very demanding, she understood how important it was to improve people’s working conditions for human well-being. So she created a business providing with flexible work-life balance solutions to small-sized companies and freelancers that so many times are misunderstood or forgotten by big companies.

Barnatalent: Could you explain what coworking is and its advantages?

Isabel Pérez: Coworking is a working philosophy coming from the United States aimed to freelancers or small businesses. It consists of sharing physical working space not only to develop your business at an affordable price, but also to make the most of sharing your working space with other multidisciplinary profiles.  Coworking promotes the exchange of ideas, professional collaborations, or simply helps you to share contacts, experiences and resources to avoid the inconvenience and the feeling of isolation when you work alone from home.

Barnatalent: Could you say in a few words what makes “Meet BCN” special?

Isabel Pérez: Meet BCN  offers well designed coworking spaces and virtual office services in downtown Barcelona at an affordable price. Entrepreneurs, freelancers can work and meet their customers and providers offering a consolidated corporate brand.

Meet BCN is located in an old, completely renovated apartment in the Eixample. The majesty of the roofs, large porches and light flooding the rooms make this place a very special one, where the routine of work becomes a pleasure.
Being aware of how a good design of space affects people’s creativity, work spaces are decorated in a very neutral character printing.

Another distinguishing feature on Meet BCN, besides its design, is its location. Located on Balmes Street (at the corner with Paris Street) is in a strategic position for business, transport and communication Meet up offers also rent meeting and training rooms, provide with office assistance services and organizes training and networking events.

Barnatalent: Do you think that Barcelona is a good destination for entrepreneurs to start/run a business?

Isabel Pérez: The number of coworking spaces in the last year has increased dramatically in Spain and more and more entrepreneurs are encouraged to work in this way.  Also, Barcelona has increased the development of entrepreneurship across platforms designed to support and to give some advice to the entrepreneur. So we think that is working style with a great future in our city, because, as the expectations of finding a job in private enterprise are scarce, more and more people have made up their mind to start a business up, becoming  potential users of this service.

Barnatalent: What are your best wishes for entrepreneurs in Barcelona in 2012?

Isabel Pérez: Our wishes for 2012 are that government and local town council associations and organizations in Barcelona continue to work on the development of entrepreneurial culture. We hope that they impulse entrepreneurial attitudes and skills from primary school, and increase support and funds to entrepreneurs. Also, banks should offer better conditions on loans and focus on need to support good business projects in such hard time of worldwide crisis. We believe that this will help long-term economic growth and job creation.
